If my uterus was a gun, I would have constitutional rights…

by Emillia Noordhoek

The idea for this piece came to me when I was in Kelly's workshop in 2022 right after the Dobbs decision that took away a woman's constitutional right to abortion. The vision was so very clear to me that our country's almost scared consideration of gun rights which so many people are "enshrined" in the US Constitution has a higher standing than the bodies of 50% of the population of actually breathing humans no longer have the right to bodily autonomy.. So the idea is to cast a gun ( a child's plastic gun ) and replace it with a pelvis as the uterus.

Part of me wanted the gun to be pointed at the viewer like really if my uterus was a gun and it was pointed at you would I have the autonomy that I feel I deserve? This was one of the first pieces I cast in iron and I think one of the more successful ones this was the year I was "lucky"..
