Nut Cracker #II
by John Siblik
I got the idea for this piece after visiting the Iowa State Fair.
"Nutcracker was started as a prototype design for a functioning nutcracker inspired by an historic design for a nutcracker specifically for cracking hard shelled American Walnuts. I later began the drawings for my version of a nutcracker, and I cast the parts I needed. The project evolved away from the prototype nutcracker into referential dialogue with the work of German-born Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim regarding her scandalous 1936-piece, Object (le dejeuner en fourrure), commonly known as the fur-lined teacup with cup/saucer and spoon. Nutcracker becomes a highly charged sexual object not unlike the real thing.”
