The Black Cat

by Margaret Eastman

I was able to make this cat of iron for two reasons: I did not know what I was doing, and I had the good fortune to find the people who very much knew what they were doing, the iron artists of the Down on the Farm Iron Pour.

If I had realized that the cat would weigh almost 50 pounds in iron, perhaps I could not have attempted it, but ignorance paid off, as this is the weightiest, most imposing, and perhaps the best sculpture I have made.

I offer The Black Cat as homage to all black cats, dear or ominous, who have ever crossed anyone’s path. A bushy tail suggests the long-haired cat, while a sleek head suggests the short-haired cat. It is all an illusion, but for an instant it looks as if the cat may stand up and walk away.
